Reverend Elwood Bannister
The death of Reverend Elwood “Al” Sterling Bannister of Codys, NB occurred at his residence on January 10, 2009 at the age of 85. Born in Elgin, NB, he was a son of the late Harold and Olive May (Sheffar) Bannister and was the husband of 56 years to Myrtle M. (Gamblin) Bannister. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Marilyn Rogers (Emery) of Codys, Paul of Oromocto, Timothy (Diane) of Kenya, Philip of Portage Vale and Peg O’Blenis (Peter) of Lower Sackville, NS, nine grandchildren, brother Delbert (Alice) Bannister of Portage Vale, step-mother Helen Bannister, stepbrother Glendon (Carol) Filmore & stepsister Fay (Ronnie) Richard, all of Riverview, sisters-in-law Lu Guravich of Fredericton and Clair (Harold) Gamblin of North Vancouver, brother-in-law William Gamblin of Codys and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son John Myles and daughter-in-law Jackie Bannister.
Reverend Bannister was a Veteran of World War II serving with the Merchant Navy. Following his graduation from seminary, he served in several pastorates in New Brunswick and one in P.E.I. He taught for eight years at the former U.B.B.T.S. and Atlantic Baptist College, where he was also Dean of Bible and Assistant Principal. He served on various boards of the Convention of Atlantic Baptist Churches throughout his ministry and for five years with Canadian Baptist Ministries, primarily in Kenya.
The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433-2133) on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9PM. Sussex Branch #20 Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Tribute Tuesday evening at 6:45PM. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday January 14, 2009 at the Sussex Baptist Church at 2:00PM. Interment will be at Coles Island Cemetery at a later date. Donations made to the Canadian Baptist Ministries or the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated.
