In the fall of 1998 Mitchell Long was just completing his funeral service training and apprenticeship at about the same time that Jim Makepeace made a decision to move on and was seeking a new funeral director to take on the family-owned funeral home that he had opened three years earlier in Sussex.

Mitchell's dad George Long had recently retired and sold his busy service station / restaurant operation. It had been about thirty years since he had arrived in Sussex as a young funeral director himself. George was ready for a break but the opportunity to watch Mitchell launch his career was tempting.

A partnership with Brenan's Funeral Homes of Saint John and the growing Select™ Network of Independent Community Funeral Homes made the package complete.

So it was that the Long's launched the Sussex Select™ Community Funeral Home in January of 1999.

As his dad gradually worked his way back to retirement, Mitchell went on to become manager of the business and over the next decade played a key role in the subsequent growth and successful establishment of the firm in the community.

In 2008 the company grew to include a second location, Armstrong’s Funeral Home in Petitcodiac, and added a new partner Terry Rogers. An experienced funeral director who had worked in Sussex early in his career, Terry returned, with his family, to his New Brunswick home to join Mitchell in the expanding business. Terry and his wife Tina soon became reacquainted with the area while serving families in both Petitcodiac and Sussex.

In the spring of 2011, after more than 12 years of dedicated service Mitchell Long decided to make a career change and left the firm knowing it was in good hands with Terry and Tina at the helm.
Sussex Select™ Community Funeral Home offers a full range of services from traditional at-need to preplanning, cremation and grief support from their modern dignified facility which includes three comfortable parlors and a 160 seat on-site chapel.
